Sharapova now US Open third favourite after stunning Halep upset

Former champion 7/1 to win second US title

Former US Open champion Maria Sharapova produced a stunning upset to defeat second seed Simona Halep at Flushing Meadows last night.

The Russian was playing in only her tenth game in 18 months since her infamous ban but managed to produce some amazing tennis to beat the Romanian, ranked number two in the world.

She produced some sparkling forehand play, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.

Remarkably, Sharapova is unbeaten in 22 night games under the lights in New York’s Flushing Meadows and is clearly relishing the return to the spotlight.

That leaves the 2006 winner of this tournament at 7/1 third favourite with Coral, behind Karolina Pliskova at 6/1 and Spain’s Garbine Muguruza at 7/2.

Having failed to win a ranking tournament in 2017, Muguruza has built up a head of steam over the summer following up her maiden Wimbledon win with victory in the Cincinnati Open earlier this month.

The 2016 French Open champion has failed to get past the third round of the US Open, though, but she remains Coral’s jolly in the outright market.

Elsewhere, the two-time champion Venus Williams is 16/1 to make it a triple crown at the ripe old age of 37-years-old. The American hasn’t won this event since 2001, though.

Jelena Ostapenko is currently at 20/1, which will certainly interest the punters looking for value.

The 20-year-old star has already won this year’s French Open and will be confident of adding a second Grand Slam to what looks like a prodigious career.

Whoever you think will win, make sure you go to Coral and place your bets for one of the biggest tennis tournaments of the year.
