WTA Finals White Group: Kvitova must beat Muguruza

Jamie Clark, Sports Editor | October 29, 2015

WTA Finals White Group, matchday three

  • Singapore Indoor Stadium, Singapore
  • Muguruza match with Kvitova on court first
  • Followed by Kerber clash against Safarova

Last chance for Kvitova

Singapore WTA Tennis

Two-time Wimbledon chance Petra Kvitova must win her first-ever fixture against WTA Finals second seed Garbine Muguruza, or the Czech Republic number one will bow out of the end of season tournament in Singapore.

Germany’s Angelique Kerber, meanwhile, can book her place in the semi-finals by beating another Czech player in Lucie Safarova, as the White Group comes to a conclusion.

Venezuelan-born Muguruza made this year’s Wimbledon final, and carried that fine form over to the hard court part of the tennis season as straight sets victories over Kerber and then Kvitova’s compatriot Safarova show.

Representing Spain, Muguruza is Coral’s odds-on 1/2 match favourite to dump 13/8 chance Kvitova out of the competition. With no previous head-to-heads to go on, it’s only current form that informs these prices.

These two have fared differently in tiebreaks during previous WTA Finals White Group contests, but odds of 9/4 say there shall be another set that goes the distance in their match.

It’s one win apiece between these two, and both those battles were on the hard surface that the WTA Finals are played on. Kerber is odds-on 3/10 match favourite, with 5/2 outsider Safarova propping up the White Group and looking highly likely to be eliminated.

These two faced off in the Fed Cup final last year, with Germany’s Kerber triumphing in straight sets. A repeat result here is 4/5, which is a better price than the outright betting on this battle.

French Open runner-up Safarova’s struggles in Singapore reflect her downturn in form since that run to the Roland Garros final, and it’s tough to make any sort of case for her. If the other result goes against her, victory over Kerber may still not be enough to take her through.
