Weekend in pictures

It was yet another exciting weekend of sport, with Jose Mourinho having made his touchline debut for Manchester United, while there was Davis Cup tennis action, Open Championship golfing glory and plenty to talk about from fight night in Cardiff, as well as horse racing from The Curragh.

The Curragh and Newbury provided plenty of racing drama across the weekend, with Mrs Danvers gaining success at the latter…

Danvers delivers for Portman in valuable Super Sprint

Local trainer Jonathan Portman saw a long-term plan come to fruition as Mrs Danvers gained a decisive victory in the £250k Weatherbys Super Sprint at Newbury.

The two-year-old grey filly forged clear to score by 1 1/4 lengths under Luke Morris.

Mrs Danvers cost just £1k when bought in at Tattersalls Ireland Ascot Sale in February and netted connections £122,925k with her latest success and is now unbeaten in three starts.

O’Brien in Seventh Heaven after Irish Oaks glory

Seventh Heaven put behind her a below-par display at Epsom to spring a 14/1 surprise in the Darley Irish Oaks at The Curragh and provide trainer Aidan O’Brien with a fifth winner in the fillies’ classic.

The daughter of Galileo finished only sixth in the Investec Oaks but returned to the form she showed to win the Lingfield Oaks Trial from Architecture and once again had that rival back in second place again.

Her stable companion Even Song was sent off the 4/5 favourite but failed to sparkle and trailed in a well-beaten seventh.

With Euro 2016 having ended, Premier League clubs are focusing on transfer business and friendly outings, and it was the Man Utd debut for new boss Mourinho over the weekend against Wigan Athletic…
