The Aga Khan owned Harzand almost didn’t go to post at Epsom after tearing a horseshoe on the morning of the big race, but under a superbly judged ride from Pat Smullen outran the O’Brien contingent, beating US Army Ranger by a length-and-a-half.

Harzand’s heroics gave his powerful connections a fifth Derby win. Ante post favourite Wings of Desire could only manage fourth for handler John Gosden behind another O’Brien entrant in Idaho.

Colombia proved too strong for hosts the USA in the tournament opener as Cristian Zapata and James Rodriguez struck to earn a 2-0 victory, with Jurgen Klinsmann’s men getting off to the worst possible start on home soil.

Mexico overcome Suarez and Uruguay

Rafael Marquez and Hector Herrera netted late to help Mexico topple Uruguay 3-1 in their Copa America opener on Sunday night, while Diego Godin and an own-goal from Alvaro Pereira had got proceedings going earlier.

Elsewhere, Haiti were beaten 1-0 by Peru, Venezuela downed Jamaica by the same scoreline, while Costa Rica and Paraguay as well as Brazil and Ecuador played out scoreless draws.
