Most memorable Chelsea v Liverpool goals

Friday Night Football was back with a bang in a thrilling end-to-end encounter between Liverpool and Chelsea.

The game was a blast from the past, drawing comparisons from great clashes between these clubs in previous matches and featured a stunning strike from Reds captain Jordan Henderson that doubled his side’s lead.

In light of this effort, Coral football writers have compiled a list of the most memorable Chelsea v Liverpool goals…

Didier Drogba (2006)

Chelsea increased the gap over title rivals Liverpool to eight points after a cracking Drogba winner in this encounter.

Drogba swivelled and unleashed an unstoppable shot to beat Pepe Reina at Stamford Bridge. His strike would prove be the decisive and claimed Chelsea three points.

The Blues would go on to finish league runners-up behind Manchester United. Chelsea are a generous 7/1 to win the title this season with Coral.

Luis Garcia (2005)

Sorry Blues fans, but Garcia’s Champions League semi-final second leg ‘ghost goal’ in 2005 is an iconic moment in this fixture.

Milan Baros was taken out by Petr Cech, allowing Garcia to get to the ball. The Spaniard then toe-poked the ball goalwards after slack Chelsea defending and was cleared on the line by a Blues defender.

Garcia wheeled away in celebration and the goal was given much to then boss Jose Mourinho’s dismay, as many thought it failed to cross the line. The Anfield outfit would go on to win the Champions League in Istanbul.

John Arne Riise (2006)

The fearless Norwegian was adored by the Anfield faithful and produced some stunners during his time on Merseyside.

Fans may remember a volley against the Blues in the League Cup final in 2005, but it is his amazing run in the Community Shield that epitomises his career at Liverpool.

Riise picks the ball up on the edge of his own box and proceeds to stride forward into the Chelsea half, reaching about 40 yards out from their goal. The redheaded left back then unleashed a monstrous strike that fizzled its way into the bottom righthand corner.

After their superb Stamford Bridge win, Liverpool are now the same price as bitter rivals Manchester United to win the league this campaign at 6/1.

Eden Hazard (2016)

A beautiful solo run from Hazard saw the Belgium star open the scoring at Anfield by turning Reds defenders inside out with amazing close control.

Hazard rode the challenge of Adam Lallana, glided past the weak Roberto Firmino and James Milner, before finessing it home for a classic Hazard goal.

The game finished 1-1 after a last minute leveller by Christian Benteke, in a season that saw the defending Premier League champions finish an embarrassing 10th and part ways with Mourinho in his second Blues spell.

Fernando Torres (2007)

Bought from Atletico Madrid for a fee believed to have been around £20m, the Spaniard marked his Anfield debut with a goal against his future club Chelsea.

Torres counterattacked quickly against a sluggish Blues defence and found himself one-on-one with the immobile Israeli Tal Ben Haim, he then breezed past him and slotted what would become a trademark right side-footed finish.

Liverpool’s Torres would go on to score 80 more goals with the Merseyside club and later moved to Chelsea for a then league record fee of £50m.

He started his Stamford Bridge career with a run of 903 minutes without a goal and scored just once in his first season at the club.
