Angela Eagle 9-4 to be next Labour Leader

Leading bookmaker Coral make Angela Eagle the hot favourite to be the next Labour leader as she formally launches her bid today. The firm witnessed support for the former shadow business secretary over the weekend, slashing her odds to 9-4 from 7-2.

Owen Smith is second best in the betting at 7-2, ahead of David Miliband at 9-1 and Dan Jarvis at 12-1. Jeremy Corbyn is priced at 7-4 to step down as Labour leader in 2016, while it’s 4-11 that he is not the leader of the party at the next General Election.

Elsewhere, in the Conservative leadership race, Theresa May remains the long odds-on favourite at 1-4 to replace David Cameron, but Andrea Leadsom has attracted support at 3-1.

“Since her announcement to run for Labour leader, Angela Eagle has attracted a lot of support in the betting,” said Coral’s Nicola McGeady.

“The betting for next Conservative leader has divided opinion however. Despite Theresa May being odds-on to win the contest, some punters are bracing themselves for another political upset and are backing Andrea Leadsom instead,” added McGeady.
