Longest Running Next Manager Market In History Draws To A Close

With David Moyes now 1/20 to replace Sir Alex Ferguson, leading bookmaker Coral is preparing to settle the longest running next Manager market in betting history that has been running for over twelve years.

The betting on who will replace Sir Alex Ferguson started way back on 31st January 2001 and, when eventually it closes in the next few days with the announcement of Ferguson’s successor, it will have lasted for twelve years, three months and a few days.

When betting opened on 31st January 2001, Martin O’Neil and Steve McClaren were the 4/1 favourites ahead of David O’Leary at 6/1, Alan Curbishley at 9/1 and Alex Mcleish at 10/1. Alex Ferguson then retracted his decision to retire in February 2002 and the market has run and run ever since until today.

“This marks the end of an era for Manchester United and Alex Ferguson, but also the end of the most incredible, drawn-out betting market ever offered by British bookmakers,” said Simon Clare, Coral Spokesman.

“At various stages over the last twelve years many of the great and the good in football management have been favourite to replace Ferguson, from Martin O’Neil to Sven Goran Eriksson, Carlos Queiroz to Steve McClaren, Pep Guardiola to Jose Mourinho. However it now looks as if David Moyes will be left holding the prize when the music stops”, said Simon Clare, Coral Spokesman.
