Bookies trumped again by US Presidential shock result

Donald Trump’s victory in the US Presidential Election is the biggest shock result ever in political betting history according to Coral with the new President having started his campaign as a 150/1 chance.

Trump started Election Day as the 3/1 outsider with Coral but his odds were pushed out to as big as 7/1 (with Hilary Clinton 1/20 favourite) by 1am this morning as the early results seemed to favour his opponent. Yet just a few hours’ later bookmakers and punters were left stunned when Trump was declared the winner.

“We have witnessed some of the biggest political shocks ever in recent times, with the unexpected Brexit vote, Jeremy Corbyn coming from nowhere to become Labour leader and the Tories winning a surprise majority at the 2015 General Election, but Donald Trump becoming President of the United States of America is by far the biggest and most dramatic shock of them all,” said Nicola McGeady, Coral Spokesperson.

“We took millions of pounds of bets on the US Presidential Election, with the majority of bets on Hilary Clinton, and yet again the majority have got it wrong. Political betting has become the most volatile and unpredictable betting market of them all,” added McGeady.

2016 will go down as the year of the upset following the shock success of Leicester City in the Premier League (5000/1 at the start of the season), the unexpected Brexit vote (3/1 on the day of the vote) and now the election of Donald Trump as US President (150/1 at the start of his campaign). If anyone had placed a £5 bet on these, it would have returned over £15 million.
