Gold rush for punters after team GB’s Olympic success
Patriotic punters are celebrating Britain’s greatest ever Olympics, triumphs which have left leading bookmaker Coral facing their biggest ever pay-out on the games.
“Following the success at London 2012, there was record interest in the Rio games, and with Team GB breaking all previous Olympic records, we have been left counting the cost of the Gold rush,” said Coral’s Nicola McGeady.
“Andy Murray’s repeat victory in the tennis and Justin Rose’s golf triumph were the two most expensive results for us, and along with all the other superb Gold medal winning performances, we’ve been hit with a £1 million hammering for the first time ever on an Olympics,” added McGeady.
Coral is now expecting many of this year’s Olympic heroes and heroines to be made a Sir or a Dame in the Queen’s New Years Honours list. Mo Farah is the shortest-priced favourite to receive the honour at 1-5, ahead of Jason Kenny at 1-3 and Laura Trott at 1-2. Andy Murray is also odds-on to be given a knighthood at 10-11, while Katherine Grainger is 2-1 to become a Dame.
