Hey dude! Bookies run scared of right royal Grand National gamble

Britain’s bookmakers are braced for the busiest day of their year tomorrow, when half the adult population of the UK enjoy a flutter on the world’s most famous race, the Grand National.  Leading bookmaker Coral predicts more than £250 million will be wagered on the day, with a wide open field for the big race headed by last year’s third Teaforthree, while other contenders the bookies fear include Monbeg Dude, co-owned by rugby star Mike Tindall who is expected to be at Aintree with wife Zara Phillips, and Double Seven, the mount of champion jockey AP McCoy.

“The Grand National remains the one event on which millions of people who don’t normally place a bet enjoy a flutter, ensuring betting shops across the UK will be packed out.  Last year the loudest cheers came from the bookies as 66-1 shot Auroras Encore came home in front, but those smiles will be wiped off our faces if Teaforthree, Monbeg Dude or Double Seven triumph, as all three will be hugely popular selections,” reckoned Coral’s David Stevens.

“With a funny or memorable name one reason for how people pick their National bet, other runners likely to be popular with the once-a-year punters include Shakalakaboomboom and The Package, while Walkon may be an outsider in the betting but he will be a favourite of Liverpool fans everywhere as the opening line of their anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone,” added Stevens.
