Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool fans cheering on 2000/1 bets on Leicester

Leicester City FC are on the brink of pulling off the biggest sporting shock in history by winning the Premier League, having been 5000/1 with bookies at the start of the season, and there are thousands of football punters across Britain who having had the foresight to back them at huge odds, are now cheering them on.

Leading betting firm, Coral, alone is facing a £4 million loss if Leicester City win the title, and have laid 114 bets at odds between 1,000/1 and 5,000/1, including some to fans of some of the biggest clubs in Britain, including these three individuals who have been happy to share their stories.

Steve Jeavons, a 55 year old from Manchester, is a Manchester City season ticket holder but put £2 on Leicester City at 2,000/1 in late August. He said today, “I would not have backed Leicester pre-season but after watching them play the first few games, they looked to be in with a chance to me.”

“I’m a huge Manchester City fan but I love to see an underdog do well. Chelsea were by far the best team in the league last season and deserved to win it. This season is much more open but Leicester have probably been the best team so far.”

“I watch a lot of football and I have been a Manchester City season ticket holder for years. I’d still love City to win the title as that is where my commitments lie, but if they don’t do it, I am hoping it will be Leicester.”

Ryan Wallis, a 29 year old Chelsea fan from Wokingham, Surrey, put £4 on Leicester City at 2,000/1 on 16th August. He explained, “I placed the bet a couple of games into the season as they looked to have started really well. Their new signings looked promising and I thought to myself, at their odds, they are definitely worth a small bet.”

“I’ve been offered a cash-out but I have not taken it because I do believe they can do it. If they beat Arsenal this weekend, they will be in a fantastic position. They’ve played some beautiful football and have been great to watch. Whatever happens, I’ve had my £4’s worth as it has been a great ride following them this season.”

“I’m a Chelsea fan but after their dreadful start, I’ve traded that for Leicester this season. If it comes to the final game of the season where Leicester play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, there is no question I’ll be a Leicester fan for the day.”

“In the other big game this weekend, I’m hoping City and Spurs see out a draw, then a win for Leicester at Arsenal would put them seven points clear which would be very nice. I’ve never had anything near a 2000/1 winner before so I am super excited at the moment.”

Stuart McLaren, a 44 year old from Liverpool, and a Liverpool FC fan, put £1 on Leicester City at 2,000/1 on 1st November. He said, “I’ve always wanted an outsider to win the Premier League, and the way they had been playing, especially with Vardy and Mahrez, made me think they could go all the way.”

“I put the bet on while I was in work and all the lads were laughing at me saying Leicester had no chance. Hopefully it will be me who has the last laugh. I just wish I had put a fiver on them now.”

“The way Leicester are playing, they can go all the way. I don’t want to jinx them though because I very rarely have any good luck. As a Liverpool fan I know what it is like for a team to fall short, just like we did a couple of years ago.”
