Man Utd 5001/1 to cause biggest shock in sporting history
Manchester United have to beat Bournemouth by an unprecedented 19-0 tomorrow night if they are to qualify for next season’s Champions League at the expense of fierce rivals Manchester City, and bookmaker Coral say it would be an even bigger shock than Leicester City winning the Premier League title, offering odds 5001/1.
Leicester City completed the greatest ever sporting upset when they won this season’s Premier League title, having been 5000/1 outsiders before a ball was kicked back in August.
“If you thought Leicester winning the Premier League title was unlikely, Manchester United clinching a top four spot with a nineteen goal demolition of Bournemouth tomorrow night would be an even bigger shock, and would break Leicester’s recent record as the biggest sporting upset in history,” said Coral’s Nicola McGeady.
“The record for a Premier League win is Manchester United’s own 9-0 victory over Ipswich Town in 1995, so it would take another ten goals to break that. However, as far as we are concerned it’s a case of once bitten, twice shy, after the Foxes achievement, so we will never again dismiss a team’s chances of creating huge shocks however slim they might seem,” added McGeady.
The firm has also produced a list of 5001/1 shots which will help put Manchester United’s potential achievement into context. Prince Harry would be 5001/1 to marry Kylie Jenner and Coral would also offer the same odds if a customer wanted to back Justin Bieber to become the American President one day.
