Murray 6-4 to be knighted in New Year’s Honours list

Andy Murray is 6-4 with leading bookmaker Coral to be knighted in the New Year’s Honours list after the British number one won the second Wimbledon singles title of his career this afternoon with victory over Milos Raonic. Murray’s success was celebrated by patriotic punters who backed the number two seed pre-tournament at 4-1, leaving Britain’s bookmakers with an estimated £20 million pay-out, according to Coral.

Murray is now odds-on at 10-11 (from 6-4) to be crowned the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2016, an award he has already won in 2013 and 2015. He is 3-1 to win the US Open later this year and 3-1 to defend his title at the 2017 Wimbledon championship.

“The odds suggest Murray’s latest Wimbledon victory may lead to the British number one being knighted in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list for 2017,” said Coral’s John Hill.

“Murray ensured that patriotic punters finally had something to cheer about this summer after the Home Nations failed to deliver silverware are Euro 2016, whilst his second Wimbledon title proved very costly to Britain’s bookmakers who have paid out an estimated £20 million on his success,” added Hill.

“Murray’s hat-trick of Grand Slam titles could also bring up his third BBC Sports Personality of the Year award where he is now odds-on to scoop the prize once again later this year,” concluded Hill.
