Sporting summer feel good factor to spark £100 million weekend flutter
With much of the UK set to bask in glorious sunshine, and a host of top class sporting events taking place, bookmakers are braced for a £100 million betting bonanza this weekend as patriotic punters get behind their home favourites.
“The climax to Wimbledon – hopefully featuring Andy Murray – the Lions decider v Australia, the German Grand Prix and the Tour de France all feature over the next few days, and with summer finally arrived, we are set for a huge weekend, as the feel good factor hits the nation’s punters,” said Coral’s David Stevens.
“Betting shop turnover increases when the weather is fine, as more people are out and about, and with so much top class sport taking place, and stars such as Murray, Lewis Hamilton, the Lions, Mark Cavendish and Chris Froome in action, as well as horseracing’s feature, the Group One Coral-Eclipse at Sandown Park, more than £100 million could be staked across the UK over the next two days, much of it by patriotic punters,” added Stevens.
“Of course it could be an expensive weekend for the bookies, a Wimbledon win for Andy Murray could cost the industry close to £5 million, and if all the home favourites do well then we will be paying for the celebrations, but having escaped a British winner at SW19 for so long, we would have to pay out with a smile,” concluded Stevens.
