Madrid can make history
If Real Madrid overcome Juventus at the Millennium Stadium this Saturday night, they will become the first ever team to successfully defend their Champions League crown in the competition’s modern format. Not only that, they would extend their lead at the top of the all-time winners list to an unbelievable 12 wins, with AC Milan their nearest challengers with seven titles.
The last team to come close to winning two consecutive Champions League titles was Manchester United who, after beating Chelsea in the 2008 final in Moscow, made it all the way to the 2009 final in Rome, only to be beaten 2-0 by Barcelona.
Madrid will be hoping to banish the “Champions League winners’ curse” in south Wales.
Juventus the ‘nearly’ men
The club from Turin have reached the Champions League/European Cup final on eight occasions, winning just twice. The last of those was back in 1996, when they won 4-2 on penalties against a very talented Ajax side that included former Liverpool playmaker Jaro Litmanen.
Since then, Juve have made the final twice. The first in 2003, where they lost 3-2 on penalties to fellow Serie A club AC Milan at Old Trafford and again in 2015, when a master class from Messi, Neymar and Suarez secured a 3-1 win in Berlin.
This game could represent Gianluigi Buffon’s last chance to win a Champions League medal, but we’re expecting the legendary Italian ‘keeper to be heading home empty handed.
