Coral Scottish Open semi-finals tips
Just four men remain in the 2016 Coral Scottish Open from Glasgow’s Emirates Arena, with snooker’s world numbers three and four battling on the baize this Saturday, as home favourite John Higgins takes on Judd Trump.
Besides that best of British fixture, there’s also a Far East potters clash between Marco Fu of Hong Kong and China’s Yu De Lu, who is on his career best run at a ranking event.
What bets appeals then? Our snooker experts assess the best Trump v Higgins odds and Marco Fu v Yu De Lu bets, and give their Scottish Open semi-finals tips…
In-form Wizard appeals among Trump v Higgins odds
Although Scottish star Higgins and young pretender Trump have met in three quarter-finals this season already, with the Bristol break builder leading those meetings 2-1, it is the form of their most recent encounter which appears most persuasive.
Higgins, nicknamed the Wizard of Wishaw, triumphed 6-4 in a best of 11 frames affair like this at the Champion of Champions event last month. That is enough to make Higgins a narrow 4/5 favourite over even money match chance Trump.
During the Scottish Open so far, home crowd darling Higgins has barely put a foot wrong, dropping just three frames in five matches during his Glasgow campaign. Those victories include a 5-2 mauling of Ronnie O’Sullivan, who recently made the UK Championship final.
Outright betting on the Coral Scottish Open clearly indicates the tournament winner is expected to come from this semi-final. Higgins established himself as a 6/4 front-runner when beating O’Sullivan, while Trump is 15/8 for the title.
Trump will be no pushover for the Wizard, however, after losing just five frames during his own run to the semis. The Juddernaught is unlikely to find Higgins as easy as he did at the Coral English Open that kicked off the 2016/17 Home Nations Series.
A closer contest looks on the cards here, and a repeat of that 6-4 Higgins victory at the Champion of Champions is a sweet 6/1 price. Taking the 11/10 for over 9.5 frames in this clash looks a safer bet.
Two of the last four meeting between Higgins and Trump have been level after four frames, so odds of 8/5 on another 2-2 scoreline by the interval appeal. The Wizard just seems that bit sharper at the moment, so should send Naughty Snooker proponent Trump home before Christmas without the present of a trophy.
Marco Fu v Yu De Lu bets: Back Hong Kong cueman
Having won all three career meetings former UK Championship and Masters finalist Fu is impossible to oppose as an overwhelming odds-on 1/4 favourite to defeat Yu De Lu.
While victory in a final frame decider over fellow Chinese cueman and Coral English Open champion Liang Wenbo is impressive from Yu De Lu, he has never held a lead over Fu.
This time it’s 11/10 for under 8.5 frames that appeals with Fu never dropping more than a couple against this opponent, and there is a massive experience difference between him and Yu De Lu when it comes to being at the business end of tournaments.
Fu is also better than the outright match win price to cover a -2.5 frame handicap at 7/10 and at 31/20 to lead 3-1 by the interval. Dispatching Triple Crown winner Neil Robertson en route to this spot in the semis underlines Fu’s fine form.
