Five US Open 2016 day 5 tips

Friday sees round three of the singles draws at the US Open commence, and there have already been some high-profile casualties in the first week of this final Grand Slam of the tennis calendar.

What are the best betting opportunities for punters to consider at Flushing Meadows? Coral tennis experts give their top US Open day 5 tips across men’s and women’s action stateside…

Bencic to beat Konta

Siding with Swiss youth over a patriotic punt in the Konta v Bencic betting could pay off as the Swiss sensation is showing signs of returning to top form.

Siding with youth over a patriotic punt in the Konta v Bencic betting could pay off as the Swiss sensation is showing signs of returning to top form.

Swiss teenage talent Belinda Bencic looked back to her best when beating 2014 French Open semi-finalist Andrea Petkovic in straight sets, dropping just five games in the process.

Last 32 opponent Johanna Konta is seeded 11 places higher than Bencic, but the Great Britain representative suffered an on-court collapse in her second round victory due to breathing difficulties.

That unfortunately makes any patriotic punt too much of a risk, so an attractive 11/8 price on Bencic looks good because she’s won two of the three previous meetings. Both of those victories came in three sets and better betting odds of 7/2 say Konta will lose 2-1 to Bencic again.

Isner to eliminate Edmund in straight sets

John Isner to end Kyle Edmund’s terrific run features among our US Open 2016 day 5 tips.

Another British representative, Kyle Edmund is on his best-ever Grand Slam run by reaching this stage at Flushing Meadows, but next comes up against the man who knocked him out of the French Open – men’s singles 20th seed John Isner.

At Roland Garros, the big-serving American made easy work of eliminating Edmund in straight sets (6-4 6-4 6-4) and, in front of a home crowd in New York, it is bold to bet against the favourite.

Backing Isner to repeat his 3-0 win over South African-born Edmund is a superb 7/4 chance.

Kvitova to continue run with repeat Svitolina victory

Petra Kvitova beat Elena Svitolina during the Olympics women's singles tennis tournament in August.

Petra Kvitova beat Elena Svitolina during the Olympics women’s singles tennis tournament in August.

Two-time Wimbledon ladies’ singles champion Petra Kvitova has a recent straight sets hard court win over Elina Svitolina from the Olympics.

If the Czech comfortably beat the Ukrainian, losing just two games en route to victory, in Brazil, then she should be able to replicate that at the US Open here.

Given that result on a similar surface, siding with Kvitova at 6/5 for another 2-0 win makes complete sense.

First set tiebreak in Tsonga v Anderson

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Kevin Anderson's encounter could go to a tiebreak.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Kevin Anderson’s encounter could go to a tiebreak.

Men’s singles ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has won his two previous meetings with in-form South African player Kevin Anderson, who took an opening set tiebreak against Vasek Pospisil in the last round.

Both of those Tsonga victories have also seen the first set go the distance, so 11/10 odds for another tiebreak between the two in the opener are very attractive indeed.

Punters can also back the Frenchman to repeat his straight sets wins from last year’s Shanghai Masters and the Rome Masters the year before at a nifty 9/4.

Friday favourites sixfold acca

We’ve also picked out a superb sixfold acca for our US Open day 5 tips, featuring three odds-on favourite apiece from the men’s and women’s singles.

Marin Cilic won the US Open men's singles title in 2014.

Marin Cilic won the US Open men’s singles title in 2014.

Former Flushing Meadows winner Marin Cilic (4/11) joins Roberto Bautista Agut (2/7), Madison Keys (1/6), Gael Monfils (1/7), last year’s finalist Roberta Vinci (2/5) and Caroline Wozniacki (4/9) as our six selections.

All of these players are in fine form coming up against lesser opposition and, at current combined odds of just under 15/4*, a £4 stake returns £18.92.
