Sport’s longest droughts as Harry Kane struggles to rekindle scoring form

Robbie Purves | September 6, 2016

Sport’s longest droughts

Harry Kane is experiencing a miserable start to the season and looks to be visibly struggling whenever he takes to the field.

The England international striker has now gone five games for his club Tottenham and six for his country without finding the net, in a remarkable downturn in form.

As a result, Coral writers have picked out some of sport’s longest droughts…

Chicago Cubs (108 years)

Chicago Cubs Training Camp 1951

If you think your team are going through a baron spell, spare a thought for those in Chicago.

The Cubs are without a Major League Baseball championship in over a century, 108 painful years to be exact. This is compounded by the fact that Chicago is the third most populated city in the US as well as third most populous metropolitan area.

They boast a long history, albeit a losing one, with a huge and loyal fanbase. However, there is light at the end of the tunnel as the team look finally set to challenge for a World Series spot.

Chicago are favourites to claim their first championship in over 100 years at 5/2 with Coral.

Alan Shearer (12 caps without a goal)

20 Years Since Euro 96 Package

Shearer came into Euro 96 on the back of an underwhelming international scoring run, comparable to that of fellow England marksman Kane.

Before netting five and finishing the competition’s top scorer, Shearer had gone 12 internationals without a goal, stretching back to a friendly against the USA in the September of 1994.

Coral’s official brand ambassador then netted during England’s opening game and the floodgates opened.

Kane will be hoping for such luck in the near future, as the striker’s quality isn’t in question. The forward had a similar rough patch to start last year, failing to score in six of his first Premier League games.

Liverpool (26 years)

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Crystal Palace v Liverpool - Selhurst Park

The Reds are now without a league title in 26 years, despite numerous close calls, flirting with the title as recently as 2014.

In 1990, Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and Alan Hansen led Liverpool to their 18th top-flight title and 11th in 17 years. At the time, no one could have imagined they would have embarked on this devastating drought.

The Anfield outfit’s collapse correlated with the rise of Manchester United, and the Merseyside club have failed to regain their place among the country’s elite ever since.

However, under Jurgen Klopp there is a cause for optimism and Liverpool are outsiders to claim the title at 11/2.

Fernando Torres (903 minutes)

Soccer - International Friendly - Spain v Bolivia - Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan

The Spaniard set a new record for a British transfer with his move to Stamford Bridge and made him the sixth most expensive footballer in history. Torres started his Chelsea career with a run of 903 minutes without a goal and scored just once in his first season at the club.

Far from the prolific sharpshooter at Liverpool, Torres struggled and scored only 20 goals in 110 domestic appearances – however, he did win the Champions League with the Blues.

The City of Cleveland (52 years)

Cavaliers Parade Basketball

For the first time in over 50 years, the city of Cleveland held a championship winning parade after NFL outfit the Browns won in 1964. Basketball’s Cleveland Cavaliers, who so many doubted when coming into the Finals, overcame previous champions Golden State Warriors in Game 7 by coming back from a 3-1 series deficit, a feat never done before.

LeBron James returned to his hometown team in 2014 and promised Cavaliers a championship. Two years later he fulfilled his promise and broke the City’s drought.

The Wine and Gold are 7/2 to successfully defend their title this coming season.
