A look – through our fingers – at some of sport’s best known injuries

Football fans were left stunned and saddened by the horrific injury suffered by Irish right-back Seamus Coleman, who broke his leg when turning out in a World Cup qualifier against Wales back in March.

Neil Taylor’s reckless tackle led to him being sent off in the goalless draw at the Aviva Stadium and it ended the Everton right back’s season for the Toffees, who at the time were seriously gathering momentum in the Premier League.

The tackle, and resulting injury, are not to be viewed if you suffer from a weak stomach, or are sitting down on your lunch break. It did get us thinking of some of the most famous – and stomach churning – injuries in sport, however. We’ll use Coleman as an example of just how bad things can get in football, and back that up with similar examples from other sports. No wonder modern kids spend all day playing computer games, exercise is dangerous

Football – Seamus Coleman

Taken out when playing for Ireland against Wales. It was a needless tackle in an otherwise dull affair…..

Boxing – Vitali Klitschko

Klitschko lost to Lennox Lewis in the British world champion’s final fight in 2003. Many had Dr Ironfist ahead at the time, but he suffered a horrible cut above his eye that forced the bout to be stopped. A fantastic contest that’s well worth another watch…..

UFC – Anderson Silva

In a much-anticipated rematch with Chris Weidman, Anderson Silva may have thought the initial result was hard to take, but he didn’t have a leg to stand on in the repeat. Bad technique, an excellent defence or just rotten luck, whatever the reason, this injury gets worse with every watch…..

Wrestling – Sid Vicious

Wrestling is scripted, right? Finding that out remains up there with the whole Santa Clause thing when you are a kid. It’s hard to take at first, but when you accept the truth it’s pretty obvious. Well, watch this injury to Sid Vicious in WCW and say that it is planned…..

Rugby Union – George North

George North should have been celebrating a try in this video for Northampton Saints against Wasps, but he didn’t bank on being taken out on the floor. A clumsy attempt to kick the ball into touch, or a cowardly swipe at an opponent’s jaw? You decide…..
