Weekend in pictures for November 5 and 6

There weren’t only fireworks at bonfire parties this weekend, with plenty of explosive sporting action to keep punters warm.

From more Andy Murray success, to Premier League goal fests and the brilliant Breeders’ Cup, Saturday and Sunday provided plenty of highlight reel moments.

Horse racing

There were huge races on this weekend, including the Breeders’ Cup and JnWine Champion Chase.

Arrogate guns down California Chrome in Breeders’ Cup Classic

Arrogate got the better of a titanic battle with California Chrome to prevail by 1/2 a length in the thrilling renewal of the Breeders' Cup Classic at Santa Anita. Odds-on favourite Chrome looked to have the race in the bag when two lengths clear and going well approaching the straight but Arrogate came with a sustained run to get up close home under a power-packed ride from Mike Smith.

Valseur Lido storms to glory in JnWine Champion Chase

Valseur Lido made an impressive return to action when slamming Silviniaco Conti in the Grade 1 JnWine Champion Chase at Down Royal. The Henry De Bromhead trained gelding travelled strongly and jumped superbly well throughout in the hands of jockey Ruby Walsh before pulling effortlessly clear after taking up the running to home to score by 11 lengths.

Matchweek 11 of the Premier League saw changes at the top of the table, as Manchester City stumbled, Arsenal and Spurs cancelled each other out and Chelsea and Liverpool pummeled their opponents.

Middlesbrough's Marten de Roon helped resilient Boro bag a point away at the Etihad. Sergio Aguero's opener was cancelled out by the guests' last-gasp goal. After the 1-1 draw, Man City have lost their grasp on Premier League top spot, falling two points behind into third place.

Chelsea fire five to chew up Toffees

It was hugs all round between Chelsea and Everton's Romelu Lukaku, though the striker had no luck at old stomping ground Stamford Bridge. The Toffees were thrashed 5-0 by the Blues, with home goals from Diego Costa, Pedro Rodriguez, Marcos Alonso and an Eden Hazard brace. It was enough for Chelsea to briefly top the table.

Harry Kane was the returning hero who stepped up to convert, save Spurs a point and prevent Arsenal from leading the league.

Manchester United got back to winning ways with a 3-1 victory over Swansea City, though Jose Mourinho's team selection starring Phil Jones and Ashley Young had surprised many pundits. Paul Pogba got proceedings underway with a spectacular volley, before Zlatan Ibrahimovic's deadly double sank the Swans.

Ireland and the all-conquering New Zealand travelled all the way to the USA to battle it out at Chicago’s Soldier Field stadium in front of 60,000 spectators. No one was expecting the result…

'Pacman' was observed at ringside by former foe Floyd Mayweather, with speculation now rife that the pair will once again collide in 2017.
