2000 Guineas day undercard – trainers, jockey’s and horses to follow

| 04.05.2013

Quite apart from the small matter of the first classic of the new campaign, there’s a whole host of high class action on the undercard, including three group-level races and some fiercely competitive handicaps. In order to aid the fine-tuning of your precision punting brains takes a look at some trainers, jockey’s and horses coming into tomorrow’s action in encouraging form.

William Haggas has his string in fine shape at the moment, sending out eight winners from 19 runners in the last fortnight. He’s doubly represented at HQ on Guineas day with Danchai going in the 2:05 and Heerat off in the Group 3 sprint due off at 2:35.

The progressive four-year-old Heerat is of particular interest after registering an impressive win in the Dubai Duty Free Handicap at Newbury on his seasonal return. Still unexposed over the basement trip, the Haggas colt has won two of his three starts at 5f.

Champion Jockey Richard Hughes has been in the kind of mood that’ll make him difficult to beat in his title defence this term, firing in 21 winners from his last 61 rides, with a further 13 earning their backers place money. He’s on the Rowley Mile for six rides: 2:05 Rye House, 2:35 Angels Will Fall, 3:50 Toronado, 4:25 Secretinthepark, 5:00 Maxentius, 5:35 Glean.

Hughes teams up with unexposed hat-trick seeker Secretinthepark for the first time in what’s just the colt’s third career race.

Six past course and distance winners are turning out at Newmarket tomorrow: 2:05 Tangerine Trees, 3:05 Dandino, 3:50 Toronado, 4:25 Shahdaroba, 5:00 Windhoek and 5:35 Red Avenger.

Of the runners that have been there and done it Tangerine Trees may pique the interest of many – the two time course and distance winner took the Palace House Stakes in 2011 and he’ll relish the good-to-firm going having won five of his 12 races on such ground.

The unbeaten Windhoek too is worthy of attention given he’s served up the underhoof conditions present on his last two winning runs.
