Westwiththenight fancied to atone for Ascot defeat

| 14.06.2013

Trainer William Haggas is a shrewd judge when it comes to running his horses in handicaps but punters burnt their fingers when Westwiththenight was beaten at Ascot last month.

The four-year-old daughter of Cape Cross was backed as if defeat was out of the question but was slammed five lengths by Gifted Girl. The winner has since gone on to finish second to Thistle Bird in a Group 3 race at Epsom and was clearly a blot on the handicap off a mark of just 92 at Ascot.

Richard Hughes rode a confident waiting race on Westwiththenight but had not bargained for Tom Queally being sat in front of him with a double handful. Westwiththenight was left trailing but ran on well enough to take second and will meet nothing of that calibre here.

The majority of these are fully exposed handicappers. Classic Colori gained a well deserved success at Musselburgh last time out having been denied a certain victory at Haydock by jockey error in May. Having worn down Albaqaa, young David Bergin dropped his hands too soon and lost out in a photograph.

Classic Colori is up just 2lbs for his latest win and should again be prominent. Tim Easterby is always liable to produce a winner at York and he has decent claims with Maven.

The five-year-old mare has been second in both her last two races, chasing home Rye House here at the Dante meeting before again filling the runner-up spot in an amateur riders race. She drops back in trip and must again have sound place claims off bottom weight.

Lord Aeryn has been a model of consistency for Richard Fahey and will be attempting to reverse the form with Ripon conqueror Suits Me. The veteran ten-year-old may have been given a soft lead that day and a 6lb pull in the weights could give the advantage to Lord Aeryn.

Sam Sharp is another one who has been around a long time but he shaped encouragingly when third at Haydock. Ginger Jack could prove best of the remainder after meeting trouble in running at Ripon in April. He finished last season with a win at Redcar and could still be on a winning mark.
