Aston Villa in best position to be latest beneficiaries of Spurs job lot

| 16.01.2014

Tottenham have developed a small habit in the last decade of shipping off multiple players to the same Premier League club in the same deadline window and there is the possibility of history repeating itself in January.

Rewind back to the summer of 2008 and Roy Keane took advantage of a Tottenham job lot to bring Teemu Tainio, Pascal Chimbonda and Steed Malbranque to Sunderland, while in 2011, Wilson Palacios and Peter Crouch were sold to Stoke, with Jonathan Woodgate also joining having been released by Spurs.

At the start of this season Hull also found success with a Spurs raid through signing Tom Huddlestone and taking Jake Livermore on loan and it is Aston Villa that appear to have the best chance of profiting in the same fashion in the mid-season window.

It is in midfield again where Tottenham look overstocked, especially since the breakthrough of teenager Nabil Bentaleb.

Villa could certainly do with some midfield reinforcement, particularly in the playmaking department.

Norwich’s Wes Hoolahan has been linked, but a loan move for Lewis Holtby could bear fruits to give him greater experience in the Premier League and the opportunity to play in his preferred number-10 role.

A strong holding midfielder would not go amiss either to play alongside Fabian Delph in the deeper midfield positions and Etienne Capoue has been the most heavily linked midfielder with a January Spurs exit.

The availability of Gylfi Sigurdsson is also unknown as he is has not featured for Spurs since Boxing Day.

With Steven Defour also linked from Porto, it will be a big surprise if Paul Lambert doesn’t buy at least one midfielder in January to strengthen his squad, with striker Grant Holt already arriving on loan from Wigan.

At odds of 13/2, Aston Villa may be the value bet of many in the Premier League relegation market at present, as they sit only five point from safety and have taken just four points from their last seven games.
