Modernstone fancied for televised Coral Handicap at Lingfield

| 03.01.2014

With Sandown already called off and Wincanton facing a 7am inspection, Channel 4 have switched to Lingfield Park’s all-weather track. Four races will now be televised including the feature handicap at 2.35.

The early money suggests that Modernstone is fancied to defy a 5lbs rise in the handicap for her recent victory over Grendisar. The progressive four-year-old came late and fast to run down Marco Botti’s runner and win by a short head.

The runner-up is 2lbs better off so it should again be close between the pair. William Knight’s filly has only raced six times and has not been out of the frame since her debut.

Botti is also represented by top weight Energia Eros and the six-year-old Halfsin. The consistent Castilo Del Diablo and the dual-purpose performer Kashmir Peak are others to consider.

The sprint handicap at 3.10 provides Karl Burke’s Rivellino with a good opportunity to follow up his impressive victory at Wolverhampton. A 7lbs penalty may not stop the four-year-old who ran well in some very competitive sprints on the turf in 2013.

The biggest threat may come from Mick Easterby’s Perfect Pasture who is seeking a sixth consecutive win. The gelding is racing off a career-high mark of 93 after winning by a neck off a 5lbs lower mark at Kempton last time.

Scottish Glen is seeking a hat-trick in the final televised race at 3.45. The eight-year-old won over course in distance in December when beating Legendary by three-quarters of a length.

Canadian Run is the other last-time-out winner in the field having romped to a six-length victory here in September. The Robert Mills-trained gelding is up 9lbs for that runaway success but must be a threat if allowed to set his own pace again here.

If Wincanton does beat the weather, Channel 4 will screen four races starting with the 1.30. The going will be heavy so ability to handle testing conditions will be the key to finding winners.

Lingfield selections: 11.50 Copperwood, 12.20 Joyful Friend, 12.50 Anglo Irish, 1.25 The Dancing Lord, 2.00 Joyous, 2.35 Modernstone, 3.10 Rivellino, 3.45 Canadian Run
