Van Gerwen only 10/1 to win PDC World Darts Champs final 7-0

| 01.01.2014

One thing that is for certain ahead of the final of the PDC World Darts Championship is that a first-time winner will be crowned, as the beaten 2013 finalist Michael van Gerwen steps up to the oche against Peter Wright.

Wright’s achievements in reaching this stage can be shown through this being his first ever appearance in the final of any of the PDC’s biggest eight tournaments and even if he loses, this will easily represent his biggest payday in the sport.

Whereas, Van Gerwen triumphed in the Players Championship Finals directly before arriving at Alexandra Palace and in total, he won 13 tournaments across 2013.

Therefore, it is no real surprise that Van Gerwen is the heavy favourite at 2/9 to win a maiden world title, especially after thrashing two-time champion Adrian Lewis 6-0 in the semi finals.

Wright is 10/3 to arguably become the biggest shock winner of this tournament ever from number 16 in the world rankings and his previous record doesn’t bode too well.

Van Gerwen has won 17 of their 23 career showdowns, including both to have come at the World Championships previously and a 13-3 triumph at the World Matchplay in July.

The Dutchman is so well fancied that it is only 10/1 that he wins the final 7-0 and 4/5 that he triumphs even if conceding a 3.5-set handicap.

A Van Gerwen victory may be tough to oppose, but the biggest banker for the final must be the 1/6 that he scores the most 180s in the match.

In Wright’s matches so far, the only player he has beaten in terms of maximums was first-round opponent Joe Cullen, while seven 180s is the most he has registered in a single match.

Van Gerwen has bettered this twice and was phenomenal when hitting 11 maximums in his 4-1 second-round success over Kevin McDine.

Given Wright’s relatively weak record in the 180 department, 21 or fewer maximums across the entire match is also worth backing at 5/6.
