Nuneaton man one horse away from record £1.3 Million win

CORAL ENHANCED ACCAS

A Coral betting shop punter in Nuneaton just needs to back one more winner at Sandown Park tomorrow to become the biggest single winner in British betting history.

The man in his 60s last Saturday won £412,961 for just a £2 horse racing bet on a special pool bet called the “Tote Scoop6”, and now has the chance to win a further £878,564 pounds bonus by selecting the winner of the “Tote Scoop6 Bonus race” tomorrow.

Should he pick the winner of the 2.05pm, at Sandown Park tomorrow he will net a total of £1,291,525 making him the biggest winner ever. He has until an hour before the race to decide which horse to back.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, placed the £2 bet in the Coral betting shop in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. He told his story earlier in the week.

“I don’t always do the Scoop6 but I thought I’d have a go given how much money was at stake. When the final horse won I didn’t really know what to think and was amazingly calm,” said the man, who runs his own business.

“I saw someone saying a ‘lucky’ punter had won the Scoop6 and I thought to myself, I wasn’t lucky, I’ve managed to pick six winners out of six. That’s skill not luck.”

He explained, “I’ve always been a punter. It’s in my genes as my dad was a bookies runner and my grandparents liked a flutter on the gee-gees, and I’ve been betting on horse racing since before I was 18 and probably a bit before.”

The man has not made any plans how to spend the £413k he has won, or thought what he would do if he won the £878k bonus too.

“My three daughters are already excitedly coming up with things to spend the money on but I have spoken to the wife and we’ll just put in the building society and decide from there. You come into the world with nothing and you leave it with nothing, so we’ll definitely use it to enjoy life and new experiences,” he concluded.

Simon Clare, who spoke at length to the customer, said, “He is the most deserving winner imaginable. He has been a regular punter for over forty years and an enthusiastic lifelong supporter and fan of horse racing. If you get out of life what you put into it, then it is entirely fitting that horse racing has rewarded this individual with a life-changing win. That said, as he pointed out quite firmly, this win wasn’t down to luck. He picked his six selections very carefully and his win was down to skill.”

The Tote Scoop6 is a pool bet accepted in nearly all high street betting shops, and requires the customer to pick the six winners of six selected races each Saturday. The winner(s) of the Scoop6 then have the chance to win the Tote Scoop6 Bonus on the following Saturday, by selecting the winner of the selected Bonus race.

The biggest ever win by a betting customer was Stuart Boland in November 2004 when he won a total of £1,132,657 on the Tote Scoop6. This anonymous customer will break that record if he wins next Saturday’s Bonus race, and net a return of £1,291,525.
