Any England player 42/1 to top score at World Cup with Coral

CORAL ENHANCED ACCAS

Coral are offering odds of 42/1 for any England player to be top scorer at the World Cup in Brazil.

Daniel Sturridge has been in sterling form this season, and has 20 goals in the Premier League. If he can establish as potent a partnership with Wayne Rooney as he has with Luis Suarez, he should terrorise defences in Brazil. Although England have a tough group, their opponents can be exposed. Italy aren’t quite the defensive stronghold they once were, and they conceded goals in qualifying against lesser teams. Uruguay are weak at the back too.

Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard has 14 goals this term, most of them coming in the form of penalties. If England play with pace, trickery and deception in and around the area, there will be no debate as to who will take the spot-kick. Likely to be his last World Cup, Gerrard as usual is bound to give his all. He opened the scoring in South Africa four years ago against the USA, and with more support this time round could kick on from that.

Although Wayne Rooney has netted 19 times so far for Manchester United this campaign, even he would admit that he has been far from his best. The striker has a point to prove at international tournaments, having failed to make an impression, and many are touting the 2014 World Cup as the year where he could come into his own for his country.

Perhaps an outsider, though Adam Lallana showed glimpses of quality in his debut for England. He has had the best season of his career for Southampton, having hit 10, and assisted countless more. He is likely to start, though where he will be utilised is another matter. If on the left, he could well be supported from behind by club colleague Luke Shaw. The pair have formed an impressive partnership, and this may continue in Brazil.
