Levy to pass the gilet on as Sherwood is sacked by Spurs

Tottenham have announced that Tim Sherwood has been sacked the club, after a five month spell saw him replace Andre Villas-Boas.

The news was not unexpected, as the north Londoners once again failed to reach the top four, but there will be plenty of speculation as to who will be the next manager of the club.

Club chairman Daniel Levy said: “We agreed an 18-month contract with a break clause at the end of the season and we have now exercised that option.”

When Sherwood was put in charge in December, the club were five points away from the top four, but they finished the season 10 behind neighbours and bitter rivals Arsenal. They had to settle for a Europa League spot after coming sixth.

Southampton’s Mauricio Pochettino, who guided his current side to an eighth place Premier League finish in his first full season, is the favourite to take over at evens, while Ajax boss Frank de Boer is next on the list at 11/4.

Former Liverpool and Inter Milan gaffer Rafa Benitez (9/2), who has gained major silverware at each of his last five clubs, including just winning the Coppa Italia with Napoli, would possibly be interested in a move back to England. Recently sacked Manchester United boss David Moyes, meanwhile, is at 12/1.

Moyes’ possible successor at the Red Devils, Louis van Gaal, who until recently was heavily tipped to be next Spurs manager, is now 20/1. He could be a fantastic bet to make, if somehow his move to Old Trafford fails.

Former Tottenham players who are linked to the job include USA head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, Sunderland boss Gus Poyet and Glenn Hoddle (all 33/1).

Sherwood, 45, will hope to continue his fledgling managerial career, and Coral give odds on him occupying the current vacant positions at West Brom (13/2) and Brighton and Hove Albion (6/4).
