Any Asian and African team to reach the semi-finals 10/1
With just 10 days remaining until the World Cup, the countdown special is nearing its conclusion. Today, Coral are offering odds of 10/1 for any African or Asian team to reach the semi-finals.
In 2010, Ghana were a breath away from securing their status in the last four of the competition, until Luis Suarez blocked a shot illegally in extra time. Still so enraged, Asamoah Gyan missed the resulting penalty. The Black Stars went out on spot-kicks. As far as everyone associated with the country and the football team is concerned, it was a national outrage.
Memories of that night still linger on, and the whole team is determined to not only progress from a group that contains Germany, Portugal, and the USA, but also go one further than last time, reaching the semi-final.
Their progress at the World Cup finals follows a pattern, however, which suggests they will reach the last four this time round. In 2006, they had a good showing, making the last 16 of the competition in Germany, where they lost 3-0 to Brazil. Four years later in South Africa, Ghana progressed one round further, beating USA in the last 16, before the infamous quarter-final match against Uruguay.
The African contingent has only got stronger. Nigeria have been drawn in a group with Argentina, Iran and Bosnia & Herzogovina, and have a very realistic chance of at least making it over the first hurdle. With a strong spine throughout their team, which includes goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, Joseph Yobo, John Obi Mikel, and prolific striker Emmanuel Emenike, the Super Eagles have a fantastic chance of flying through the competition.
South Korea represent the last Asian nation to reach the semi-finals at a World Cup. They hosted the competition in 2002, and as a result this gave them the momentum, after they produced shock results against Portugal, Italy and Spain.
With just days to go, take advantage of this brilliant bet from Coral, and come back tomorrow!
