CORAL ENHANCED ACCAS

Dress your head like royalty this Derby Day, Coral’s Katie Thompson takes us through the do’s and don’ts of racing headwear.

The Epsom Derby will be upon us tomorrow and ladies and gentlemen will be gathering in their droves to witness the excitement of this year’s Derby Day.

100,000 fashion forward gamblers will attend this year’s event, while 5 million of us will place a bet whether we’re attending or watching from home.

Among the most highly anticipated bets is the famed Queen’s Hat Colour Bet. In keeping with this year’s colours, Coral has predicted we’ll most likely see Her Majesty sporting a blue hat, with odds of 4/1.

Purple and pink are close second favourites, with odds of 5/1 and 6/1 respectively, while more daring gamblers can take the risk of a 33/1 bet on a green hat, or a 100/1 gamble that she will be wearing no hat at all.

For those ladies looking the rival The Queen in the fashion stakes, Coral has teamed up with royal milliner Jane Taylor to help you choose the perfect headwear for the event.
Flatter your features

To really wow the crowds at Ladies’ Day, choose a hat that flatters both your facial features and your figure. Petite ladies should choose a hat with a smaller brim to avoid looking swamped, while taller ladies should avoid drawing attention away from their faces with smaller hats.

Similarly, your hat should accentuate your best facial features – those with long, slender faces should choose headwear with a deep crown, while those with rounder faces can experiment with angular hats that cut across the forehead.

Be wise – accessorise

A common fashion faux pas is to go overboard when matching. If your hat is made of lace, don’t choose a lace dress – go for a more subtle look with matching shoes or handbags instead. Avoid wearing the same colour head to toe as well, as this will look drab and ageing.
Position cocktail hats just above your eyebrow and make sure brimmed hats are tilted just above your eye. For windier days, you can keep your hat in place with hair clippings, which can be obscured with your hair.

Wear it with confidence!

Finally, the best accessory you can wear is a smile, so pick a hat that makes you comfortable and doesn’t swamp you in photographs. Cocktail hats are great for showing off your face in photographs, so wear them with pride and expect to be treated like royalty on Derby Day.
