Angel delight but Rojo still awaiting clearance for Burnley trip

| 29.08.2014

The last time these two sides played at Turf Moor, Burnley were 1-0 victors on the opening day of the 2009/10 season, and the newly-promoted side are 5/1 chances to inflict more pain on Manchester United by beating them again.

New Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal may be without a win this season from his opening three competitive games in all competitions. But United face pointless Burnley next, as they look to build on their slow start under the Dutchman, and are odds-on favourites at 8/15 to take the three points.

United’s last meeting with the Clarets, though, resulted in them beating their northwest neighbours 3-0 at Old Trafford, with newly appointed Red Devils and England captain Wayne Rooney amongst the goals. The 28-year-old, who has netted once this term, is 7/2 to score first, and 4/1 to get two or more. His team are 11/1 chances to win 3-0 again.

While Marcos Rojo is set to miss out yet again due to work permit issues, his fellow new recruit and compatriot Angel Di Maria could make his debut after the attacker’s British record transfer fee of £59.7m. The 26-year-old only scored four times for former side Real Madrid in La Liga last term, but he topped the assist charts with 17 (11 in his last 11 games), and could be crucial for laying on goals for his new teammates.

After United’s 4-0 humiliating loss to League One side MK Dons in midweek in the Capital One Cup, their opening day defeat to Swansea City and draw with Sunderland, Van Gaal’s men are desperate for a victory.

They can take confidence from the fact, though, that the last time they started a season in similar fashion (1992/93 with two losses), they went on to win the inaugural Premier League title. Van Gaal also shares the same number of points as Sir Alex Ferguson after the Scotsman’s opening two league games as United boss.

Both Burnley and the Red Devils have poor recent Premier League clean sheet records, so take odds of 27/10 for the two teams to score and Van Gaal’s men win.

The Clarets have netted just once in their three losses all season, with Scott Arfield getting the opener against Chelsea. He is a 7/1 chance to score again anytime. Lukas Jutkiewicz and Danny Ings, meanwhile, would be better shots to be on target, and they are both 15/8 in the same market.
