Cech-ing out: Five possible destinations for Chelsea stopper

| 20.08.2014

After finding himself on the sidelines against Burnley in Chelsea’s opening Premier League campaign, it seems Petr Cech has seen the writing on the wall and will reportedly seek reassurances regarding his future at Stamford Bridge.

Cech has been the undisputed number one Blues stopper for 10 seasons, and could rightly wonder what he has done to be displaced, as Chelsea begin the new term as 11/8 favourites to lift the Premier League trophy.

Jose Mourinho now faces the task of juggling two talented goalkeepers, with the experienced Czech international and young Belgium starlet Thibaut Courtois both vying for a place.

Speaking recently, Mourinho stated: “I hope Petr doesn’t want to go and I hope he doesn’t have offers to go and, if he does have offers, he refuses to go.”

It appears the controversial coach would like the 32-year-old to fight for a starting spot, but Cech is at 5/2 to leave before the summer transfer window slams shut.

If he does decide his future lies away from Stamford Bridge, the world class Keeper should have plenty of potential suitors.

Real Madrid
Los Blancos’ problems between the posts have been an issue since former coach Mourinho first took over at the Bernabeu. Captain Iker Casillas suffered a serious loss of form under the current Blues boss, which resulted in him losing his place to Diego Lopez.

The Spain skipper has not yet recovered, as illustrated by his poor performances at the World Cup, leading Real coach Carlo Ancelotti to draft in Costa Rica keeper Keylor Navas.

So far Casillas has still started the season as Madrid’s number one, but if Cech were to become available, surely Ancelotti would jump at the chance to reunite with his reliable and consistent former charge?

Brendan Rodgers has drafted in fresh faces for practically every position in his squad except the important role between the sticks.

Whilst it appears the Reds will still make further signings in the striker department, they have surprisingly not been linked with adding goalkeeper cover, despite letting Pepe Reina depart for Bayern Munich.

Simon Mignolet was shaky last season, as Liverpool leaked 50 league goals, and has continued this campaign in the same suspect vein of form.

Whilst it would be a controversial switch, adding Cech to Anfield ranks could be the most important signing Rodgers has yet made for the Reds, who are 10/1 to win the Premier League.

Parisian rich kids PSG have long been credited with an interest in Cech, ever since it emerged that Courtois was to return from his successful three-year loan stint with Atletico Madrid.

The French club currently have Italy international Salvatore Sirigu in nets, but there is little doubt that Cech would be an instant upgrade on the 27-year-old.

PSG’s league rivals Monaco have also been linked, and are still reported to be keen on the keeper despite swooping for Fulham flop Maarten Stekelenburg.

Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund’s chances of reclaiming the Bundesliga title from increasingly bitter rivals Bayern Munich already look slim following Polish poacher Robert Lewandowski’s defection.

Their competitors also have Manuel Neuer between the sticks. The former Schalke stopper is rightly considered one of the best players in the world in his position, and was crucial for Germany’s World Cup success.

Jurgen Klopp currently has vice captain Roman Weidenfeller as his number one, but acquiring Cech would go some way to bridging the gap in quality. A backline boasting Mats Hummels and Neven Subotic in front of the Czech keeper would surely be daunting prospect for any opposition.

Cech could also follow in former clubmate Ashely Cole’s footsteps by making a switch to Serie A. Current options Morgan de Sanctis and Bogdan Lobont are both a level lower than Chelsea’s backup option, as well as being several years older.

Roma are always on the hunt for a bargain and may have further funds to work with if they sell star centre back Mehdi Benatia.
