Pearson and Porter paired over Commonwealth sprint hurdles

| 01.08.2014

It’s the penultimate day of track and field from Hampden Park, and Coral have markets open on four of the seven sets of medals on offer at the Commonwealth Games athletics.

During a packed programme the relay race heats take place, plus golds will be decided in Women’s Discus, Men’s 3000m Steeplechase and 10000m, and the following four events too.

Women’s High Jump
The bulk of this field just needed to clear 1m 85cm to make it through to this final, but that was no indicator as the medal contenders have all gone higher. Australia’s Eleanor Patterson is the 6/4 favourite, because she’s a 1m 96cm jumper at her best.

Saint Lucia’s Lavern Spencer (5/2) looks a better bet, however, as she has cleared that height this season. Expect her to better the bronze she picked up in Delhi. Isobel Pooley of England (11/2) will also be in the mix for medals.

Men’s Pole Vault
Nobody has vaulted higher than England’s Steve Lewis this season, so he starts as the 7/4 favourite for gold. Compatriot Luke Cutts and Canadian vaulter Shawnacy Barber will be close challengers, however, at 9/4 apiece. Max Eaves, another English athlete, could come close at 11/2 too.

Women’s 800m
Kenya’s Eunice Sum is a massive odds-on favourite at 1/12 to add Commonwealth gold to the world title she took in Moscow last year. Looking to stop her are Canadian middle distance runner Melissa Bishop (10/1), up-and-coming Ugandan athlete Winnie Nanyondo (18/1) and bright English hope Jessica Judd (also 18/1).

Women’s 100m Hurdles
It’s the latest chapter in the Sally Pearson versus Tiffany Porter rivalry over the sprint hurdles. Reigning Commonwealth champion Aussie superstar Pearson is odds-on at 2/7 to be on top of the podium again after scooping silver in Moscow, behind the USA’s Brianna Rollins, at the worlds last summer. Porter, hurdling for England, is 5/2 to snatch the title from her. Other finalists are rank outsiders to get gold.
