Arsenal interested in Sevilla anchorman Grzegorz Krychowiak?

| 29.10.2014

Arsenal, 7/2 shots with Coral to win a major trophy this season, are interested in signing Sevilla’s Poland international defensive midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak in the January transfer window, according to tabloid reports.

The holding role is a problem position for Arsene Wenger with 30-somethings Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini having both struggled for form and fitness this term. Krychowiak, 24, who helped his country cause a huge upset by beating Germany for the first time in Poland’s history has the caught the eye since a summer switch to Seville from Ligue 1 outfit Reims.

As attractive an option as he looks, Krychowiak will not be snapped up on the cheap by Arsene Wenger. He will have to pay a reported release clause of £24m to land the Pole in January. Sevilla sit second in La Liga, having lost just one match so far, and are level on points with Barcelona and one ahead of Champions League holders Real Madrid.

The Bathtubs, as Sevilla are nicknamed, boast the fifth-best defensive record in the Spanish top-flight and have proven Colombia striker Carlos Bacca scoring the goals at the other end. Krychowiak is part of a hugely solid midfield assembled by Unai Emery this summer, which also includes former QPR enforcer Stephane Mbia and Argentine playmaker Ever Banega.

North London outfit Arsenal kept their first clean sheet in seven across all competitions last time out with a 2-0 Premier League victory up at struggling Sunderland. Commentators and critics are unanimous over their need to strengthen defensive positions, something which is reflected in their already long odds of 25/1 to win the title.

Signing a new centre back is also viewed as top priority; Wenger is linked with a big winter window splash for Borussia Dortmund and Germany defender Mats Hummels. Adding both him and Krychowiak to the Gunners roster at the same time would be expensive indeed. Arsenal are 5/2 chances to win Champions League Group D, which pits them against Dortmund again in November.
