Newmarket Preview: Temptress tough to beat

| 22.10.2014

Temptress looked a filly going places when scoring last time out and can make light of an 11lb rise in the weights to follow-up in the 1m handicap at Newmarket today (5.25).

The Roger Charlton trained daughter of Shirocco showed a smart turn of foot to slam Felwah by 4 1/2 lengths in a six-runner contest at Ascot off a mark of 80 and the form has a rock solid look to it.

The runner-up won her next two starts in decisive fashion before finishing an excellent close-up fifth in a Listed contest at Ascot last time out and is now officially rated 96.

Given that Temptress was receiving just 4lb from her at Ascot, it makes an 11lb rise for what was such an impressive success look on the lenient side.

A revised rating of 91 could well underestimate Temptress, who has only had four starts and looks a potential pattern performer in the making.

The three-year-old also won on rain-softened ground at Goodwood earlier in the year, so the slow conditions are unlikely to be an issue.

In the first division of the 7f nursery (2.00), Jillanar looks a potential improver now switched to handicaps and can go well at a big price.

The George Margarson’s filly shaped with plenty promise on debut at this venue on good-to-soft ground when third of 12 to East Coast Lady, and was then far from sigraced when fifth of 10 to the now 109-rated Malabar at Ascot.

The daughter of Lawman then put in an eye-catching effort last time out over 6f at Yarmouth when keeping on under tender handling to finish a never nearer 1 1/2 lengths fifth of 12 to Deep Blue Sea, and the step back up to 7f looks sure to suit.

Jillanar appears to have been brought along steadily with nurseries in mind, and an opening mark of 70 looks exploitable.

Poyle Jessica makes her handicap debut in the second division (2.35) and could be very well-treated off an opening mark of 64 based on her debut run.

That came on the July course at this venue where the daughter of Royal Applause kept on nicely to finish a not knocked about 1 1/2 length fourth of 11 to Luna Moon.

The runner-up Cockney Island subsequently went on to finish an excellent fourth of 21 in a valuable sales race at Doncaster and is now rated 85, and that suggests that Poyle Jessica is potentially well-treated off an opening mark of 64 in this class 5 contest.

The booking of Oisin Murphy to partner the Ralph Beckett trained filly also suggests a big run is on the cards, as he has a 30% strike rate when teaming up with the yard in the past 12 months.
