Sunderland snap up defensive veteran Anthony Reveillere

| 23.10.2014

Sunderland (5/2 to be relegated from the Premier League) have announced the free signing of veteran right back Anthony Reveillere. The 34-year-old joins the Black Cats on a season-long deal, and will wear the number 15 shirt.

Former France international Reveillere will provide Gus Poyet with another experienced rearguard option, having been called-up by his nation for the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, and made close to 300 appearances for Ligue 1 giants Lyon.

Reveillere began his senior career with Rennes, before switching to the Stade de Gerland, where he spent ten successful seasons, winning five league titles and two Coupe de France trophies.

The robust right back has extensive experience in both the Europa League and Champions League, and also lifted silverware with Serie A side Napoli last term, enjoying 18 outings for Rafa Benitez’s boys as they won the Coppa Italia.

Sunderland’s swoop for the out-of-contract star is seen as a swift response to their 8-0 drubbing from Premier League rivals Southampton last time out. The addition of another defender to the ranks should give current options Billy Jones and Santiago Vergini, who scored a spectacular own goal in the Saints’ demolition of his side, a much-needed wake-up call.

Reveillere could be thrown into the deep end as soon as the Black Cats’ next clash against Arsenal, with Poyet desperately seeking to shore up his defence before the Gunners’ visit to the Stadium of Light. Sunderland are reportedly just waiting on the green light from the Italian FA before putting their newest recruit into action.

The Black Cats have lost just one home game this term, so are available at 4/1 to clinch victory against Arsenal, or 5/1 to keep a clean sheet after replenishing their rearguard.

Poyet’s boys have suffered a dismal start to the season, having won just two games in all competitions. The Black Cats are currently hovering just above the Premier League relegation zone and, with tough upcoming tests against Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Everton, will be hoping the arrival of Reveillere can end their Wearside woes.
