NFL: Red hot Steelers narrow favorites to beat slumping Jets

| 09.11.2014

Pittsburgh Steelers will try to keep pace with the Cleveland Browns in the closely fought AFC North when they travel to Met Life Stadium to take on the foundering New York Jets as 3.5-point favourites with Coral.

The 6-3 Steelers have been dominant in their last three outings, scoring a combined 124 points while covering the spread in decisive wins over Houston, Indianapolis and Baltimore.

Pittsburgh’s sudden hot streak, fueled by quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s back-to-back six-touchdown performances, reversed the team’s fortunes after a middling 3-3 start, 2-4 ATS, including outright losses on the road to division rivals, Baltimore and Cleveland.

Visitors Pittsburgh head into their latest matchup deadlocked atop the AFC North with the Browns, who moved to 6-3 with a convincing 24-3 win in Cincinnati.

The Jets will be in search of answers in their matchup with the Steelers. Losers of their last eight SU, New York (1-8), have also been a massive betting disappointment, just 1-7-1 ATS this season.

With serious question marks at quarterback following the benching of starter Geno Smith in favour of veteran Michael Vick, the Jets have cooled in offense, averaging just 290 yards of total offense in their last five games, while averaging just 15 points per game.

Baltimore Ravens will also be looking to keep pace in the AFC North when they take on Tennessee Titans as 10-point home favourites.

The 5-4 Ravens find themselves in the division basement following a pair of SU and ATS losses to Pittsburgh and Cincinnati that knocked them from first place in the division.

Tennessee (2-6) have just one SU win in their last seven and are 3-5 SU in their last eight road dates. However, the Titans have enjoyed success on the road against Baltimore, posting a 10-5 SU record in their last 15 visits to Maryland.

New Orleans Saints will be gunning for their third straight win, SU and ATS, when they welcome the San Francisco 49ers to the Superdome as 5.5-point favourites.

The 4-4 Saints have rebounded from a dismal 1-3 start with three wins in their last four, reclaiming top spot in the NFC South and bolstering their Super Bowl odds at Coral, currently pegged at 16/1.

San Francisco (4-4), who had started the 2014 NFL campaign perched among the favorites in that market, are struggling through a two-game SU losing streak and are just 3-5 ATS this season. Not surprisingly, the 49ers’ Super Bowl odds have since dipped to a middling 25/1.

In other NFL action this week, the 7-1 Arizona Cardinals will be gunning for their fifth straight win when they take on St Louis Rams as 6.5-point home favourites.

Kansas City Chiefs (5-3) hope to gain ground on AFC West leaders Denver Broncos when they visit Buffalo Bills, who boast the same NFL record this term, as slender 1.5-point road favourites. Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers, meanwhile, renew one of the NFL’s oldest rivalries, with the 5-3 Packers favoured by a TD over the struggling 3-5 Bears.
