World Championship 1st round: Title hopes Lewis and Bunting in action

| 23.12.2014

As the World Darts Championship reaches the end of the first round, Coral preview the Tuesday evening action, which features a thrilling line-up in double world champion Adrian Lewis and current holder of the BDO version of this event. Mervyn King and Vincent van der Voort also face their opening match of the tournament.

Vincent van der Voort (23) v John Henderson
Van der Voort may be overshadowed in the world of darts by his Netherlands compatriots Raymond van Barneveld and Michael van Gerwen, but he has the potential to cause a couple of upsets here, as he reached the quarters in 2011.

The Dutch Destroyer has had a decent 2014 too, getting the semis of the Players Championship Finals and last 16 at the European Championship, but faces a potentially tricky test.

Scotsman Henderson (9/4 for victory) has beaten Van der Voort (odds-on at 1/3) in three of their five encounters, although the duo have not played since 2012. Back the Dutchman at a more seductive 7/2 price for a 3-2 scoreline in his favour.

Mervyn King (10) v Max Hopp
King is one of the more consistent players on tour and, despite being 48 now, still has the potential to match up to his semi-final appearance here in 2009. He is also a double runner-up in the BDO version of this event.

German starlet Hopp, 18, who is playing in his third World championship, stands in King’s way in the first round, though, and is a 4/1 chance to cause a shock. The King is odds-on favourite at 1/6, and 7/5 to win 3-0.

Adrian Lewis (3) v David Pallett
World number three and champion here in 2011 and 2012 Lewis has not been knocked out before the quarters here since 2009, and is heavily fancied odds-on at 1/16 to beat fellow Englishman Pallett (8/1).

This match should be a whitewash for tournament 10/1 fourth-favourite Jackpot, and is still odds-on to win 3-0. The victor will face the impressive Keegan Brown.

Stephen Bunting (27) v Jermaine Wattimena/Robert Marijanovic
The Bullet Bunting is new to the PDC, but is the current title holder of the BDO World Championship and 22/1 sixth-favourite.

Liverpool-born Bunting, 29, will face one of preliminary qualifiers Wattimena of the Netherlands or Croatian Marijanovic, both of whom are priced at 5/6 to win their pre-main draw encounter. The victor of this first round tie will face the daunting task of having to beat James Wade next.
