Heskey hopes for happy homecoming at Anfield in FA Cup clash

| 24.01.2015

Liverpool’s official website announced that their upcoming FA Cup fourth round home tie with Bolton Wanderers is a sell-out, perhaps due to the expected return of former Reds cult hero Emile Heskey.

The ex-England international veteran scored 60 goals during his time at Anfield in all competitions. So Heskey, who netted on his debut for the Trotters and has two strikes to his name for Liverpool against Bolton, is a terrific 11/2 chance to score anytime here too.

“It’s a wonderful thing to go back,” Heskey said prior to the game. “I’m 37, I’m not a young lad so to go back and play at Anfield is a great thing.

“It wasn’t long ago, a few months ago, when I was doing work for LFCTV so to actually be going back there and putting my boots on and playing against Liverpool is wonderful.

“I’ve thought about it. The fans were wonderful to me while I was there. I’ll hopefully get a good reception and play my heart out.”

Past meetings in the FA Cup do not bode well for Liverpool (1/3 odds-on favourites) either, as they have lost six of their 11 battles with Bolton, winning just three.

The Trotters even triumphed in their last encounter, in the Premier League 3-1, and are 9/1 chances to claim a victory or 4/1 for a creditable draw.

Heskey may partner another former top-flight hero in Eidur Gudjohnsen, who set him up for his only Bolton goal to date. The ex-Chelsea star is also 11/2 to net anytime.

There is also a return to Anfield for Jay Spearing, who came through Liverpool’s academy, and the defensive midfielder, who never scored for the Reds, is a longer 16/1 shout in the same market.

Potential new Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson has a goal to his name against Bolton, though, in his side’s last home meeting with them (a 3-1 win), and the versatile midfielder is 7/2 to net anytime. The Reds, meanwhile, are 11/1 to claim a victory by that scoreline once more.

Current captain Steven Gerrard and Martin Skrtel have also got goals against the Lancastrians, and are respective 6/4 and 6/1 shouts in the anytime market.

In four FA Cup meetings at Anfield between these two northwest clubs, Bolton have won two and lost just once. Both of those victories in the Trotters’ favour were to nil, and they are very tempting 20/1 chances to triumph without conceding again.

Neil Lennon’s new team, though, have won just one of their last 11 meetings, losing 10. Liverpool beat them to nil on six of those occasions, and are 23/20 to do so once more.

Brendan Rodgers’ men are 9/1 shouts to win the FA Cup, meanwhile.
