Harry Kane can stop Spurs rot of Liverpool losses at Anfield

| 10.02.2015

Liverpool, unbeaten in their last nine at Anfield, have won to nil against fellow top four hopefuls Tottenham in each of their previous three head-to-heads. That is why Coral make Brendan Rodgers’ Reds odds-on 4/5 favourites for three points.

Spurs striker Harry Kane has never been unleashed in this fixture, however, and with seven goals in five Premier League outings in 2015, Mauricio Pochettino can feel confident of causing an upset. Tottenham are a tasty 10/3 to win on Merseyside, with a draw priced at 13/5.

While Liverpool’s star young talent Raheem Sterling has already been integrated into England’s senior set-up, BBC pundit Danny Murphy, who played for both the Reds and Spurs, thinks Roy Hodgson should do the same with Kane.

“I’m struggling to see a weakness in the lad’s game,” added Murphy of Kane, who has 22 goals in all competitions for Tottenham. “He’s so young, but he’s so powerful.

That sensational scoring run includes braces against Chelsea and Arsenal in the north London derby last time out. Kane features in a fabulous 9/4 enhanced anytime scorer chance, though punters please note there is a maximum stake of £20 on this matchday special, and a tempting 10/1 chance for two goals or more at Anfield.

While Kane is yet to take to that turf in a Spurs shirt, Belgium defender Jan Vertonghen bagged a brace on the Red half of Merseyside two seasons ago. He is a 9/1 anytime scorer chance.

Christian Eriksen is another of Tottenham’s key performers, and they beat Liverpool to his signature in 2013. The Denmark attacking midfielder could haunt Rodgers here, and is a 2/1 chance to be on target here.

Sterling, meanwhile, has been ruled out of this match with the foot injury that forced him off during the Merseyside derby stalemate. In his absence, Rodgers may call upon Jordan Ibe, 11/4 to net in this match, which is the same price as Adam Lallana, who should return.

Gerrard is a 15/8 anytime scorer chance, but punters should be aware midfield colleague Jordan Henderson was on target home and away in this fixture last term for Liverpool. The vice-captain is an awesome 11/2 to net again against Tottenham.

Daniel Sturridge will have seen Spurs counterpart Kane rise to prominence during his injury absence, but may step up his comeback here by being involved again from the bench. He is 4/1 to round off the scoring.

As Tottenham have lost just one of their last six on the road, and because of Kane’s frightening form, there’s no logical evidence for another Reds win to nil. If anything Rodgers’ rearguard, even with three men at the back and a clean sheet in the Merseyside derby last time out, are going to struggle to contain Kane.

Instead, we should see a midweek goal-fest and the match total being over 3.5 is a worthy 7/4 shout.
