Premier League top four chances Southampton (2/1) have completed the loan capture of Benfica attacker Filip Djuricic on transfer deadline day until the rest of the season.

The 23-year-old Serbia international arrives after he spent the first half of this season at German club Mainz, where he played a bit-part role, and he becomes the Saints’ second capture his transfer window.

Djuricic certainly has what it takes to succeed, having been in Benfica’s treble-winning squad in the 2013/14 campaign when they claimed the league and two cups.

While the Serb has not been as prolific in front of goal in his spells at the Portuguese champions and Mainz, he had a good record when playing for his previous club Heerenveen in the Netherlands, netting 26 from 111 appearances.

Compatriot and new teammate Dusan Tadic, meanwhile, spoke of Djuricic before the move was confirmed, saying: “Filip is a really good player and a really good guy, we play in national team together.

“He’s having a difficult time in Mainz, but he’s a good age and a good player with quality. I think he would be good here.”

Djuricic is certainly no stranger to British fans, as he scored twice in a World Cup qualifier against Scotland, to help his nation win 2-0 that day in March 2013.

He was highly-rated as a youngster, and it seems his progress has somewhat stalled, but he will hope that magic man Ronald Koeman can et the best out of him.

Southampton are currently high-flying in the Premier League this term, up in fourth place in the table, and they will need all the strength in depth they can if they are to remain there at the end of this season.

The Saints have already sold midfielder Jack Cork to Swansea City, so Djuricic produces cover in that position, but is able to go forward more too. He will be able to compliment more defensive players Morgan Schneiderlin and Victor Wanyama.
