Chelsea gunning for Green as suitable Cech replacement

CORAL ENHANCED ACCAS

Chelsea will turn their attentions to capturing Robert Green as a replacement for Petr Cech this summer, with the Czech Republic number one seeking a move away from Stamford Bridge, after dropping behind Thibaut Courtois in the Blues pecking order.

Cech is currently on international duty, as his country look to make a further push for Euro 2016 qualification, and they are 6/4 with Coral to qualify from Group A.

The experienced shot-stopper has endured a season in unfamiliar territory, having become the understudy to his Belgian teammate, and he has recently declared his desire to once again regain a starting position at a top club.

Chelsea seem unable to offer their veteran stopper that role, and have reportedly switched their focus towards QPR’s goalkeeper Green, who would be expected to happily undertake the job as back-up goalkeeper to Courtois in the later stages of his career.

The reliant Cech has been at the club for 11 years, but will seemingly seek a new adventure this summer, with Jose Mourinho identifying Green as a suitable candidate to fill the potential void being left.

Reigning Champions League victors Real Madrid are likely to search for a new number one, with club icon Iker Casillas having suffered a constant decline in recent seasons, and Cech fits the bill perfectly for a role between the Bernabeu sticks.

QPR’s experienced Green has recently been called up to Roy Hodgson’s England set-up, ahead of a qualifying encounter with Lithuania, and an international friendly clash against four-time World Cup winners Italy.

With Courtois the probable number one at Stamford Bridge for the next decade, Green could provide solid cover for Mourinho’s men, with the 35-year-old former West Ham United man only having only another year left on his current contract at Loftus Road.

Chelsea’s move for Green wouldn’t be that surprising, with the club having previously signed veteran Australian stopper Mark Schwarzer, who went on to make 12 Blues appearances, including both legs of last season’s Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid.

A move to Stamford Bridge at this stage of Green’s long career is a potentially attractive proposition, but before then, the England international must help QPR to avoid relegation, and they are 6/1 to beat the drop this year.
