2015 Grand National: Nina Carberry booked to partner First Lieutenant

CORAL ENHANCED ACCAS

Nina Carberry will have another chance at becoming the first woman to ride the Crabbie’s Grand National winner at Aintree after being booked to partner the classy First Lieutenant.

The 30-year-old has had four rides in the National, completing the course three times and finishing seventh on Character Building in 2010.

In First Lieutenant, she has a partner who is a superb jumper and could be well-treated off 11st 3lb if the unique National fences can spark him back to life.

The Mouse Morris trained 10-year-old is on a long losing run having not scored since landing a Grade 1 contest over the Mildmay fences at the track back in 2013.

However, First Lieutenant did run a cracker to finish runner-up to Boston Bob in the Punchestown Gold Cup 12 months ago and, having once been rated as high as 170, is set to run off a rating of 154 in the big race on Saturday, April 11th.

That gives the gelding a big shout at the weights on the pick of his form, and Morris believes First Lieutenant has a better chance the Lastofthebrownies who he saddled to finish fourth in the National in 1989.

Although Carberry is yet to ride First Lieutenant in public, the pair have schooled well together over a National-style fence in recent days according to Morris.

Carberry got the call up to ride the Gigginstown House Stud owned runner after their retained jockey Bryan Cooper was ruled out through suspension.

She has ridden plenty of winners in their colours, and First Lieutenant looks the type who could give her a great spin in the Aintree spectacular on ground which should suit.

Coral are currently 33/1 about First Lieutenant, and that could well represent a bit of each-way value in a typically wide-open renewal.
