Chelsea plotting audacious Anfield raid for Jordan Henderson

| 06.04.2015

Liverpool were recently thumped 4-1 by fellow top four hopefuls Arsenal, as Brendan Rodgers’ Reds received a hammer blow to their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League, a blow which could fatally see star names depart this summer.

The Anfield outfit are now 6/1 with Coral to secure a coveted top four position this term, having dropped to fifth place, and their likely failure to qualify for Europe’s elite competition could potentially lead to more Merseyside misery, with Jordan Henderson the latest player to be linked with a departure.

England international Henderson has developed into one of the club’s most important figures, with the former Sunderland midfielder having been tipped to succeed Steven Gerrard as skipper, once his imminent departure to the MLS is completed.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has reportedly been monitoring Henderson’s current contract situation with a keen eye, as Liverpool prepare to possibly lose some vital stars this summer.

Raheem Sterling was the first Anfield attacker to express a desire to prolong a new deal, leading to heated speculation of a move away from the red half of Merseyside. It seems that Henderson is the latest player to have a summer switch in his thinking, as the chance of playing Champions League football in red next term is looking unlikely.

Rodgers will hope the future of his influential midfielder can be sorted out quickly, with the 24-year-old’s current deal only having a single year remaining, one season more than that of his teammate Sterling.

Vice captain Henderson initially struggled to make an impact at Liverpool, following a £20m transfer from the Black Cats in 2011, but his ferocious form this current campaign has seen him rise to prominence for both club and country.

The midfield maestro has struck four times in his previous five Premier League outings, proving his worth to Reds boss Rodgers. Although, with Euro 2016 set to place next summer, and England set to secure qualification, Henderson may seek a move to a club competing in the Champions League in order to continue his potent progression as a goalscoring midfielder.

Mourinho’s Blues fit the bill perfectly and, with the club aiming to secure further English talent, Henderson could soon make the switch from Anfield to Stamford Bridge, a move which Reds captain Gerrard was agonisingly close to completing back in 2005.

Liverpool’s key hopes of silverware success lies in the FA Cup, and the Reds are a 9/4 chance to lift the trophy at Wembley this year.
