Wolverhampton Preview: Fey can follow-up

| 02.04.2015
CORAL ENHANCED ACCAS

Fey created a good impression when winning on her debut, and looks weighted to follow-up on her handicap bow in the 1m 1f fillies’ contest at Wolverhampton today (14:40).

Trained by Charlie Appleby, this three-year-old showed a good attitude to overcome greenness in a 1m maiden at Kempton and get up late to beat Waldnah by a neck, so the form reads well in the context of this contest.

The winner has gone on to score since by three lengths and is now rated 81; that suggests that Fey could well have got in lightly off an opening mark of just 74.

A daughter of New Approach, she is certainly bred to be far better than it, and the way she finished off the race at Kempton suggests today’s extra furlong should suit.

Another plus is that Fey hails from a yard that continues to be in good form, and Appleby has a terrific strike rate of 35 per cent with in the past 12 months (31 winners and 22 placed from 88 runners).

With further improvement looking assured, and William Buick in the saddle, this looks a nice opportunity for Fey to go in again before
going on to better things.

Buick can complete a double on the card aboard favourite Sugar Boy in the 7f maiden (16:40).

This colt has had just two starts, and shaped like a sure fire future winner when last seen in action at Lingfield.

The John Gosden trained son of Areoin finished a 4 1/2 length fourth of 10 to Benendel, but ran far better than the bare result indicates.

After being held-up in touch on the inside, Sugar Boy was denied a clear a run when trying to make a move two from home and Buick had to sit and suffer until approaching the final furlong.

By this time the leaders had flown, but Sugar Boy kept on really nicely under tender handling to be nearest at the finish.

It was an effort which suggested he would be well up to winning a race of this nature, and Sugar Boy looks the type who should have plenty more to offer this season.
