Arsene eyes Carvalho for Arsenal after Petr Cechs in at Emirates

Arsenal, 5/1 with Coral to win the Premier League, have maybe pulled off the deal of the summer, in convincing goalkeeper Petr Cech to join from Chelsea.

In doing so, they could well have guaranteed them a significant more amount of points for next season, however Arsene Wenger is wasting no time and has momentum on his side.

There had been strong reports that the Gunners had secured a deal to land Chile international midfielder Arturo Vidal from Juventus, though it appears that this is mainly wild conjecture.

Instead, Wenger now seems to have turned his attentions to Sporting Lisbon player William Carvalho, after sterling performances for Portugal at the Under-21 Championship. The 23-year-old is more in the mould of a defensive midfielder than Vidal, which Arsenal need.

Carvalho was tracked by the Gunners last year, however, Wenger wasn’t prepared to pay the £37.5m release clause that he had in his contract, though recent signs indicate that the Frenchman has been convinced and while he may not offer the full amount, a deal could be negotiated for a fee in the region of £30m.

Should they land the imposing midfield anchorman, it will no doubt elevate their status further across Europe and make them credible chances for the Champions League.

He would also provide requisite competition for Francis Coquelin, one of the success stories of last season at the Emirates, who is likely to have a big impact on the side next term.

Carvalho will slot in alongside the equally impressive Santi Cazorla in midfield, and provide the perfect foil for the Spaniard to craft openings and build attacks as he did to great effect last season, with Mesut Ozil ahead of him flanked by Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott.

Arsenal are also reportedly said to want another centre half and a striker in the transfer window, with Ezequiel Garay and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang both heavily linked.
