Barcelona sign wingback Aleix Vidal from Sevilla

| 08.06.2015

Barcelona (10/3 with Coral to retain the Champions League in 2015/16) have announced the signing of Spanish wideman Aleix Vidal from Sevilla for £16m on a five-year deal, despite FIFA sanctions being placed on the Catalan club’s transfers until 2016.

Vidal, who has passed his medical, will not be allowed to officially play a game for the Nou Camp club until January 2016 but, according to reports the right winger, who can also play as an attacking full back, will be able to train with the team.

Barca have moved quickly to bolster their already star-studded squad following a triumphant fifth Champions League final victory against Italian giants Juventus, and their capture of a historic second treble, including La Liga and Copa del Rey crowns, as part of a sensational campaign.

Current right back incumbent Dani Alves is likely to be the biggest casualty of rampant Vidal’s arrival, though doubts remain over the Brazil star’s Nou Camp future, as the soon-to-be out-of-contract Samba Boy is yet to agree a new deal.

Irrespective of whether the defender departs, having been linked to both AC Milan and Manchester United, Barca appear keen to refresh their right flank, and versatile Vidal should make an excellent addition to Luis Enrique’s roster.

Watch Vidal in action:

Still uncapped for Spain, 25-year-old Vidal’s swashbuckling performances for Sevilla this season have seen him called up by La Roja coach Vicente del Bosque, and a debut should be on the cards sooner rather than later.

A move to the Nou Camp would surely help Vidal’s Spain prospects, and the Catalan flank threat is already somewhat of a local, having spent a portion of his youth career with Barca and represented Espanyol B from 2008-2009.

Fleet-footed Vidal’s big break eventually came with minnows Almeria in 2011, who he helped gain promotion back to La Liga, where he subsequently caught the eye of Spanish big-guns Sevilla with consistent performances for the Andalusian outfit.

The Bathtubs reportedly poached the electric wingman for a bargain price of around £3m last summer, and their punt paid off, as Vidal chipped in with six goals and 11 assists to become a key cog in Unai Emery’s Europa League winning side, notably netting twice and providing an assist in the semi-final first leg against Fiorentina.

Having enjoyed an excellent debut season, Vidal looked set to enjoy Champions League football with Sevilla next term but Barca, who require cover down the right, have now swooped in quickly to secure his services.
