Five golfers to watch in The Open Championship at St Andrews
The Open returns to the home of golf as St Andrews prepares to play host for one of the most eagerly anticipated sporting events on the yearly calendar.
With not long to go until the prestigious tournament, Coral look at five to watch and even have a cheeky flutter on.
After a 100 per cent success rate at the two Majors this year, Spieth simply cannot be ignored and it will be an interesting test away from American soil, on what can be a formidable Links course. At 9/2 to win, he is still a decent price and should he show continue in this year’s form, he will be the man to beat and has won in Scotland before as an amateur in 2011 when he won the Walker Cup with the USA.
Although it is debatable whether he will play after injuring his foot recently, while playing football with friends, Coral still price the Northern Irishman at 7/1 second-favourite to retain the trophy he won last year. Despite it being something he could have done without, he has a couple of weeks for the bruising to go down and he definitely won’t want to miss the tournament.
Having won The Open on three occasions before, the former world number one cannot be ignored and, despite a poor performance at the US Open, he will remember his good form at Augusta earlier in the year and at 28/1 could be decent value. You never know when Woods is going to get his game back together again, though if he does, he will take some stopping!
The 2010 Open winner, is coming into form at the right time, to conquer again and was impressive at Chambers Bay, finishing tied for second. He is definitely worth considering at 25/1 and the South African will remember his exploits from five years ago.
Ireland’s hope will be battling to be best of the British at St Andrews, after an impressive performance at the US Open when he tied with McIlroy and Jason Day. At 45/1 he could be considered a credible outsider and if he can up his game just a little bit and luck goes his way, he could be in with a shout.
Coral recommended tip: Oosthuizen win @ 25/1
