Glorious Goodwood (14.35): Latharnach to cash-in on class drop

CORAL ENHANCED ACCAS

Latharnach has some strong form to his name and can take advantage of a drop in class to get back on the winning trail in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood (14.35).

The Charlie Appleby trained colt won two of his three starts as a juvenile, and looked a smart prospect in the last of those when beating the now 116-rated Time Test by 2 3/4 lengths at Sandown.

That view was confirmed on debut when Latharnach finished an excellent 1/2 length second in a Listed contest at Newmarket, and the three-year-old then took his form to new heights when a cracking second to Gleneagles in the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stake at Royal Ascot last month.

Although no match for the brilliant dual Guineas winner, Latharnach stuck to the task well to be beaten 2 1/2 lengths.

It was a terrific effort on just his fifth start, and one which earned the son of Iffraaj an official rating of 113.

That is the highest in this line-up, and Latharnach is going to be very hard to beat if reproducing anything like his Royal Ascot run now eased in grade.

Should Lathanarch fail to live up to expectations, then Convey and Moheet look the most likely to take advantage.

The former is trained by Sir Michael Stoute and could not have been ore impressive when winning his sole start as a juvenile at Kempton.

Convey stormed clear from the furlong marker to win going away by five lengths, and although the form is nothing special it was a very taking performance.

This represents a huge step up in class and a big ask on just his second start after 296 days on the sidelines, but Convey does hold entries in future Group 1 contests and falls into the “could be anything” category.

Moheet is trained by Richard Hannon and was far from disgraced when finishing eighth of 18 to Gleneagles in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on his penultimate outing.

The colt then found the step up to 1m 4f beyond him when just 10th of 12 to Golden Horn in the Investec Derby, but looks the type who may have more to offer back at 1m and should be up to making an impact at this level.
