Lingfield preview: Wild about the chances of Frantical

| 22.09.2015

Frantical can take advantage of a drop in class to land the 1m 2f handicap on today’s card at Lingfield (15.50) now partnered by Frankie Dettori for the first time.

The Luke Dace trained gelding has only had seven starts, and came good at the second time of asking when staying on well to land a 1m maiden at Nottingham by a head 12 months ago.

Frantical was allotted an opening handicap mark of 68 on the back of that success, and was far from disgraced off it on his seasonal reappearance when eighth at Newbury and shaping better than the bare result suggests.

The three-year-old was then clearly not right when beaten out of sight next time up over course and distance, and was subsequently given a break to freshen up.

Frantical then showed that running to be all wrong when an excellent 2 1/4 length fourth of 13 to Double Heaven in a class 4 contest over 1m at Sandown last time out off a mark of 67.

That run should have blow away the cobwebs, and Frantical is now able to race in this lower grade class 5 contest off 2lb lower.

It gives Frantical major claims from a handicapping perspective, especially as he remains lightly-raced and open to improvement, and the booking of Dettori suggests that connections mean business.

In the 1m handicap (17.20), Vale Of Iron looks nicely treated on the pick of his form and decent value to finally open his account.

The John Best trained gelding is yet to get his head in front in 14 starts, but has made the frame on six occasions.

Vale Of Irons best form has come on the all-weather, where he has been placed four times in six starts, and his run three starts back at Kempton when second of 12 to Rocket Punch in a class 4 contest of a mark of 67 reads particularly well in the context of this lower grade class 5 affair.

The three-year-old made good headway from the rear two from home to take up the running inside the last and kept on well to be beaten just 3/4 of a length, and finished three lengths in front of the fifth home American Artist, who has won three times since and is now rated 90.

That gives the form a strong look, and Vale Of Iron is able to race in this off just 1lb higher.
